SOS Sahel UK's office is in Oxford where there are two permanent staff: the Programme and Administration Officer and UK Finance Manager. The Oxford team are supported periodically by volunteers and consultants contracted to carry out time-bound pieces of project work. SOS Sahel UK staff report to, and are managed by, seven UK-based Trustees.
SOS Sahel Sudan remains under the auspices of SOS Sahel UK while it develops its capacity as a national NGO. The Director of SOS Sahel Sudan, based in Khartoum, manages approximately 35 staff working on major donor-funded projects in North and South Kordofan, Red Sea State and Darfur.
Transformation
In 2003 we embarked on an ambitious and exciting process of transformation in which we devolved governance to Africa as part of our commitment to the principles of African leadership and African-led development. National NGOs with African boards are now operating successfully in Mali, Niger, and Ethiopia. In Kenya, the former SOS Sahel UK programme has been integrated within the work of an existing NGO, Resource Projects Kenya. Governance of the programme in Sudan remains temporarily the responsibility of SOS Sahel UK with the same long-term aspiration for an independent African organisation in Sudan.
